A meditation for the Feast of Saint Praxedes, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”, Volume IV of the Time after Pentecost.Saint Praxedes (also known as Prassede) was a second-century Roman virgin and martyr celebrated for her courageous devotion to the persecuted early Christian community. According to Christian tradition, she and her sister, Saint Pudentiana, were the daughters of Saint Pudens, a prominent Roman senator who was an early convert to Christianity. Following the martyrdom of her parents and sister, Praxedes used her significant wealth to shelter pursued Christians within her home, provide financial aid to the poor, and comfort those facing execution. She is particularly remembered for her harrowing act of collecting the blood of executed martyrs using a sponge and storing it in a well to ensure their sacred remains were preserved.
