Together with Peter and John, he belonged to the inner circle of the Apostles, witnessing the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus' daughter, and Christ's agony in Gethsemane. Zealous in temperament, he and his brother were called the "Sons of Thunder," yet his fervor was transformed by grace into steadfast apostolic courage. According to ancient tradition, James preached the Gospel in Spain before returning to Jerusalem, where he became the first of the Twelve Apostles to suffer martyrdom, beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa I around A.D. 44.
