A meditation for the Feast of Saint Clare of Assisi, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”, Volume IV of the Time after Pentecost.Saint Clare of Assisi (1194–1253), a noblewoman of Assisi and spiritual daughter of Saint Francis, founded the Poor Clares and became one of the great witnesses to evangelical poverty in the medieval Church. Inspired by Francis’s example, she renounced her wealth and family prospects and fled her home on Palm Sunday in 1212 to consecrate herself entirely to Christ. She established a community at San Damiano, where she and her sisters lived a life of prayer, penance, contemplation, and radical poverty, refusing to possess property even collectively. After years of struggle, Clare obtained from Pope Innocent IV the “Privilege of Poverty,” allowing her community to remain completely dependent upon God’s providence. Revered for her profound devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and her unwavering fidelity to Franciscan poverty, she died on August 11, 1253, and was canonized only two years later by Pope Alexander IV.Please note that Servant of God Dom Prosper Guéranger went to his eternal reward in 1875; at this point, Volumes I-IX (Advent to Pentecost Saturday) had been completed, but Volumes X-XV (Trinity Sunday to Advent) had not yet been completed. Thus, the remaining readings of the Liturgical Year, from Trinity Sunday until Advent, were not directly authored by Dom Prosper, but were the work of his disciple Dom Lucien Fromage.
