If you've ever gone looking for the curriculum that would finally get your kids excited about learning, I'm going to save you some time: you're not going to find it. This week, I'm explaining where motivation actually comes from, using two stories from my own classroom that I think about all the time. One is about a kid named Sam, wicked smart, totally unmotivated, whose mom once told me it was my job to make him want to do the work. The other is about a quiet ninth grader who found his own motivation through poetry, not because of anything I assigned, but because of his brother.
