Summary
We went on a field trip! The State Hospital for the Insane No 2 opened in November of 1874 just east of the city of St. Joseph Missouri. It started out with 275 beds and only 25 patients and was open for 127 years. The patients worked the land, tended to crops and livestock and the hospital only had to buy seasonings. In the early 1950’s the asylum had almost 3,000 beds and housed a variety of individuals. They had the criminally insane, people who were just depressed to the people who were just annoying to their relatives.
