Summary
Melissa Barthelemy’s sister picked up a ringing phone. The voice on the other end was Rex Heuermann’s. He had just killed Melissa. And he described what he had done. That detail came out during sentencing — the same proceeding where a judge called Heuermann a disgusting coward and ordered him removed while families chanted ogre. Three consecutive life sentences. A hundred years. No appeal. The sentence looks like an ending. It isn’t. Heuermann confessed to killing Karen Vergata during a confidential proffer session — a woman he was never charged with killing. He brought her up himself. He volunteered information to get credit. And as part of his plea deal, he agreed to sit with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and describe everything. But the plea covers New York. Heuermann owned properties in South Carolina and Nevada — both death penalty states — where women disappeared. The judge said “eight that we know of.” The question is whether the cooperation that earned Heuermann his plea was designed to close the case or to prevent anyone from opening the ones that might carry a needle.
