Maureen vanished in July 2007 after telling a friend she was leaving to meet a client. Prosecutors alleged Heuermann used burner phones to contact her, that cell-tower data placed those phones in Massapequa Park, and that he checked her voicemail after she disappeared. DNA on a leather belt used to bind her remains matched his wife's profile. She was the first of the Gilgo Four to disappear — a twenty-five-year-old mother whose daughter was seven. Melissa vanished two years later, in July 2009. The burner phone she'd connected with traveled the Massapequa-to-Manhattan route on the day she disappeared. Hours later, her own phone traveled back in the opposite direction. Then came five weeks of calls to her fifteen-year-old sister — targeted, timed, always under three minutes. Prosecutors alleged Heuermann searched online afterward for images of the victims' families. Heuermann pleaded guilty to both murders, confirming strangulation in each case.
