The drought reshaped Great Zimbabwe's economy and social structure, weakening the old guard of hereditary priests (mhondoro) and strengthening the king's direct control over food and water resources. We discuss recent paleoclimatic data from stalagmites in the Matopo Hills, which confirms a severe multi-year drought around 1290–1320 CE.
