Trade in cloth from the Swahili coast—especially from Sofala and Kilwa—was central to Great Zimbabwe's wealth, used for everything from daily wear to royal regalia and bride-price. But when Mambo Ndabaningi, a regional governor, began hoarding cloth and manipulating prices, Chitono had to act. We discuss the role of the muraya (royal council) and the nganga (spirit mediums), the complex network of trade routes linking the interior to the Indian Ocean, and the rebellion that nearly tore the kingdom apart. We also touch on the symbolic importance of cloth, the use of copper and gold in trade, and the delicate balance of power between the mambo and his chiefs.
