Summary
Four hundred alien obelisks stand on Kepler-9e, and Vanguard Consortium is cutting them down faster than its archaeologist can learn what they mean. After fifteen years of minor digs, Dr. Phelps finally has the discovery that could define a career: concentric rings of crystalline structures surrounding a monolith covered in an intact alien language. Less than half is decoded. The company funding the excavation has already learned what it needs to know. The crystal can be refined into fuel. Then a grammatical clue overturns nine months of research. The obelisks are not tombs. The monolith is not a memorial. And the civilization that left it behind was not honoring its dead.
