Shares in Taiwan fell sharply Wednesday as a spike (急遽上升) in international crude oil prices amid renewed United States attacks on Iran heightened fears of inflationary pressures. The bellwether electronics index fell 2.06 percent after contract chipmaker TSMC shed 2.25 percent, and with the tech sector facing a sell-off, buying rotated to select old economy stocks as safe havens (避險標的). The financial sector also outperformed the broader market, rising 0.45 percent, as analysts say many stocks have been undervalued, encouraging bargain hunters to buy. Civil groups calls for relase of HK activist Civil groups are calling for the release of Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong after he pleaded guilty (認罪) to a national security charge with a potential life sentence. Representatives from groups including Amnesty International Taiwan and the Taiwan Hong Kong Association called for Wong's release and for charges against him to be dropped. They also urged an end to what they called the use of national security laws to suppress (壓制／打壓) peaceful advocacy and freedom of expression (言論自由). They also called on Taiwan's government to publicly speak out over Wong's case. The 29 year old is already serving a 4 year 8 month prison sentence in a separate national security case, which he had been expected to complete early next year.
