In 1543, the Ethiopian Empire faced its greatest existential threat. The armies of the Adal Sultanate under Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, known as Ahmad Gragn ('the Left-Handed'), had conquered nearly all of the Ethiopian highlands, burning churches and forcing conversions. But at the Battle of Wayna Daga, a coalition of Ethiopian loyalists and Portuguese musketeers turned the tide. This episode focuses on the pivotal skirmish of Ansata, where Gragn was killed, the aftermath of his death, and the uneasy peace that followed.
