Summary
Psalm 61: The Rock That Is Higher Than I "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I." There is something wonderfully honest in that little phrase — "higher than I." David does not ask to become the rock himself, to develop an unshakeable inner fortitude through sheer willpower. He asks to be led to something above him, something he cannot reach on his own. He is crying from "the end of the earth" — that place, geographical or spiritual, where one feels farthest from home and most exposed. And his prayer is not for the distance to shrink but for a refuge to appear within it. The shelter, the strong tower, the covert of wings — these are not David's achievements but God's architecture, already standing before David ever needed them. And perhaps the loveliest turn is the ending: "So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows." The daily-ness of it matters.
