Summary
Luna recounts a visit to an old stone chimney standing alone in a clearing off Route 9 near Thurston, Ohio. It was early March 1998, a wet gray afternoon when she stopped to photograph the site for a local history project. The chimney was all that remained of a house that burned down in 1973, but someone had been tending the fireplace inside it — fresh ash, warm embers, a child's mitten on the hearth. She stayed too long. She watched the shadows move in ways that had nothing to do with the sun. By the time she left, she understood why the locals called it the Waiting Chimney.
