Summary
You’ve heard the quote a hundred times. But nobody ever explains the science behind why it’s actually true, and once you understand it, the whole conversation changes. In this episode I go into the neuroscience, behavioural research and psychology behind how the people around us genuinely shape who we become, from the mirror neurons firing in your brain as you observe others, to the emotional and behavioural contagion spreading between people below the level of conscious awareness, to the way standards and ambitions quietly recalibrate based on proximity. I also explore something the motivational version of this quote never touches: why the same person can be a dominant, natural leader in one room and feel like a shadow of themselves in another, what the research says about personality and susceptibility to influence, and why understanding which kind of person you are, in which contexts, is one of the more valuable things you can know about yourself.
