Summary
Matthew 21: 28-32 But what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ The son answered, ‘No, I won’t go,’ but later he changed his mind and went anyway. Then the father told the other son, ‘You go,’ and he said, ‘Yes, sir, I will.’ But he didn’t go. Which of the two obeyed his father? They replied, “The first.” Then Jesus explained his meaning: I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do. For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn’t believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins. ———- So, Jesus tells this story and he asks us a question – “What do YOU think about this?” Really, what do you think about this? Are others who are doing far worse things than you ultimately better than you from a Heavenly perspective? In this culture, the fastest and surest way to refer to someone you would look down on is to associate them with two categories of people: Tax collectors or prositutes. Tax collectors were notoriously crooked and corrupt. They would steal from anyone for their own benefit. And prostitutes were considered the lowest of women, who made their living off other’s sins. So for Jesus to say both of these looked down on categories of people would get into the Kingdom of Heaven before them, it brought everyone who heard it down off their holy pedestal. Those listening thought they were righteous. Those listening thought they were better than others because they knew what to say and said it well…
