Summary

A grilled cheese sandwich turned into one of the clearest parenting lessons I've had in a long time. I was coaching a mom this week whose tween was trying to make her own grilled cheese, and it was a struggle. The butter wasn't spreading evenly, the flip kept falling apart, and the frustration built fast. Mom was doing everything "right," patient, encouraging, right there to help, and it still wasn't landing. She wanted to know how to get her kid through that discomfort without giving up. My answer wasn't about grilled cheese technique. It was co-regulation. In this episode, I walk through what co-regulation actually looks like on an ordinary day, not just in the middle of a meltdown or shutdown. I share why doing an activity in tandem, each of you making your own sandwich side by side, sends your kid's nervous system cues of safety that verbal instruction never will. I break down the three practical entry points I use with coaching clients all the time: tandem activities, body doubling, and serve and return, and I give you real examples for every age, from building Legos side by side with a five-year-old to learning a brand new skill together with your teenager. We also get into why your grilled cheese should never be a perfect grilled cheese, and how letting your own mistakes show is one of the most regulating things you can do for a kid who's stuck in perfectionism. If you've ever wondered how to show up for your kid without hovering, correcting, or turning everything into a lesson, this episode gives you a completely different way to think about co-regulation and connection. It might even change how you look at folding laundry. Listen to the full episode now. Take the free quiz to find out where to start with your neurodivergent child: parentingadhdandautism.com/qu…
