What makes the difference between a community where artists simply survive… and one where creativity becomes part of the living infrastructure of democracy? Today we’re continuing our series exploring the building blocks of effective community arts practice. Joining me once again are activist poet, performer, educator, and creative change agent Alice Lovelace, along with educator, cultural strategist, and longtime arts and democracy leader Barbara Shaffer Bacon. Together we tackle a deceptively simple question: What are the essential ingredients of a healthy and thriving art and social change ecosystem? We Explore: Why healthy arts ecosystems don’t happen by accident. The false assumption that cultural health is defined by economic development. Why the strongest cultural ecosystems reach far beyond the arts themselves—connecting artists with public health, education, environmental justice, youth development, and other sectors that shape the well-being of a community.
