Despite Alioto being upfront from the beginning that the film was fiction, the project—initially dismissed by his school—took on a life of its own.Because Dean was already well-read on UFO lore and alien abduction stories at the time, he drew inspiration from many of the narratives circulating in the late 1980s. That familiarity inadvertently gave the film an authenticity that resonated with parts of the UFO community.Today, decades later, Dean finds himself uniquely positioned to talk about public deception, misinformation, and how easily belief can take hold.
