However, Byzantine was simply the eastern half of the Roman empire. Although Byzantine was primarily Christian, Christians did not build it from the ground because the eastern empire was a continuation of the collective empire, and it inherited all the same economic, social, legal, etc. elements from a primarily non-Christian world. To paint Byzantine as a Christian empire as opposed to the alternative Muslim world is dishonest because their greatest enemy was the non-Muslim Sasanian empire, which embraced Zoroastrianism -- a religion not dissimilar from, but far predating, Christianity. The Byzantine empire utilized slave labor to the same extent the Romans or Muslims used them. Further east, Laozi was writing the same things found in the New Testament 500 years before Jesus.
