Unfortunately, when handbook season rolled around, I made the same mistake year after year after year. Let me know if this sounds familiar. During the year, a teacher would do something annoying and frustrating: Maybe they repeatedly showed up late. Maybe they didn’t meet deadlines on report cards. Maybe they sent emails with grammatical errors. Maybe they missed recess duty or lunch duty. Maybe they failed to communicate with parents when small issues bubbled up. And what did I do? I created a new policy. I added another paragraph. I made the handbook more specific. I added another potential consequence. And then one day I realized that my employee handbook looked less like a professional guidebook and more like a legal document written to control the worst employee I ever had.
