Eric Garner Civil rights Lawsuit Before Police Murdered Him The 2007 lawsuit was a handwritten, pro se federal complaint filed by Eric Garner accusing members of the NYPD of extreme, unlawful police harassment and a highly invasive illegal search. Garner alleged that an NYPD officer subjected him to a humiliating unlawful body cavity search on a public sidewalk. In his handwritten filing, Garner stated that the officer was \"digging his fingers in my rectum in the middle of the street\" while bystanders walked past.
