THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 1908 — The Tunguska event: A massive explosion flattened 800 square miles of Siberian Forest (likely an asteroid or comet). ----- SUDDEN IMPACT! On June 30, 1908, an asteroid or comet exploded high above Siberia, creating the largest impact event in recorded history. The Tunguska explosion flattened an estimated 80 million trees across more than 800 square miles but left no impact crater. Scientists continue studying the event to better understand future asteroid threats. ----- ICE CREAM SODA Before milkshakes dominated American diners, the ice cream soda was the king of summer treats.
