Driven by privacy and security concerns — since these devices can record video and audio — Minister Katy Gallagher is seeking advice on whether to prohibit them across all Commonwealth offices. While not banning imports outright, the government is pushing agencies to set their own rules, mirroring local bans in places like public pools and playgrounds. The debate pits tech progress against personal privacy, with smart glasses seen as empowering tools for people with disabilities — yet also potential weapons for harassment, as studies show many videos posted online could qualify as abuse. State-run institutions like schools and hospitals will remain unregulated under this plan, leading to inconsistent policies nationwide. Meanwhile, the government is also working with businesses to establish AI safeguards, signaling a broader, proactive strategy to manage emerging technologies responsibly in the workplace.
