Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 231 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we share practical tips to improve your leadership. This week we look at how to prepare for an underperformance conversation. Most leaders think the hardest part of a performance conversation is the conversation itself. In my experience the hardest part is often the period beforehand. It's the days or weeks spent thinking about the conversation, worrying about how the other person might react and wondering whether you're approaching the situation in the right way. I've noticed that when leaders describe a performance conversation that went badly, the problem rarely started in the conversation itself. More often, the leader entered the discussion without enough clarity. They hadn't fully thought through what they wanted to achieve. They weren't clear on the evidence they wanted to discuss. They hadn't considered the other person's perspective. And because they weren't prepared, they became reactive when the conversation didn't unfold exactly as expected. What's interesting is that the conversations we avoid are often the conversations that would help the most. A performance issue continues. Team members become frustrated. Standards start slipping.
