The name \"Ozark\" originated as a phonetic English adaptation of the 18th-century French trading post moniker Aux Arkansas. Home to more than 7,500 documented caves in Missouri alone, the region harbors specialized troglobytic and stygobytic organisms adapted exclusively to subterranean environments, as well as critical maternity roosts for endangered bat species. Human engineering permanently altered the landscape in 1931 with the completion of the Bagnell Dam on the Osage River, creating the Lake of the Ozarks.
