Archaeological evidence reveals that Native Americans ventured deep into the cave's dark zones over 4,000 years ago, leaving behind perfectly preserved artifacts like woven grass slippers and discarded torches. In the 19th century, the cave served as a massive saltpeter mining operation during the War of 1812 and was later extensively mapped by Stephen Bishop, an enslaved 17-year-old whose 1842 cartography remained the standard reference for decades.
