Through systematic scans of the sky between 1938 and 1943, Reber mapped celestial radio emissions and discovered powerful, non-visible radiation sources in constellations such as Cygnus and Cassiopeia, which scientists later identified as active galaxies and supernova remnants. His measurements demonstrated that cosmic radio waves emitted stronger signals at lower frequencies than higher ones, contradicting standard physics predictions regarding thermal radiation. This discovery provided the first observational evidence of synchrotron emission, high-speed electrons spiraling around magnetic fields, occurring on a galactic scale.
