For generations, many men were taught that being a good husband and father meant one thing above everything else: provide. Work hard. Pay the bills. Keep food on the table. Make sure your family never goes without. Tommie learned that definition by watching his father work for 35 years at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio. Later, the Army reinforced another version of the same lesson: long hours, responsibility, sacrifice, and mission first. Then fatherhood forced him to confront a painful truth. For 18 years, Tommie consistently paid child support for his son, believing that financial provision was at least one way his son would know that his father cared. Then his son told him: “I didn’t know you paid child support.” That moment changed the way Tommie understood fatherhood. In this episode of Four Titles, One Truth, Tommie and Lance have an honest conversation about the difference between providing for your family and being present with your family. They discuss the definitions of manhood they inherited, how work and success can unintentionally cost our families access to us, what children actually remember about their fathers, and whether relationships can still be rebuilt when a man realizes he was present in provision but absent in presence.
