So, what is vert? For all of those in the trail running community, it is short for Vertical Elevation Gain. Basically, it is climbing a mountain, and we have all faced mountains in our lives. This 'vert' may be an upcoming race, or simply getting up the courage to start training for a 5k. Or, this mountain is an obstacle, a burden, a fear that you just want to claw your way up and conquer. These are conversations you will hear about, and I hope they will inspire you to do the impossible and face the impossible with greater hope.","last_synced_at":"2026-07-19T00:18:07.985210+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/facing-vert-6327711"},"episode":{"title":"087: Appalachian State Injury Lab-Dr. Alan Needle","slug":"087-appalachian-state-injury-lab-dr-alan-needle","published_at":"2026-05-11T20:50:58+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/facing-vert-6327711/087-appalachian-state-injury-lab-dr-alan-needle","show_page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/facing-vert-6327711","url":"https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/facingvert/episodes/087-Appalachian-State-Injury-Lab-Dr--Alan-Needle-e3j03ip","audio_url":"https://anchor.fm/s/db6f2d50/podcast/play/119589913/https%3A%2F%2Fd3ctxlq1ktw2nl.cloudfront.net%2Fstaging%2F2026-4-6%2F423621703-44100-2-550c16dd3871d.m4a","summary":"I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Alan Needle not only about his running adventures, but the research he is conducting at races put on by Tanawha Adventures and Dirty Wolf. Alan and his team are conducting a survey-based research study that is aiming to better understand what changes risks of falling and other injuries while you're running. So, if you are running the Kettlefoot, Ridge to Rails, Black Copperhead Sting, HAROC or Beast of the East you need to sign up to be part of this study! More races could be added, so stay tuned by following Injury Lab's instagram @injurylabappstate or checking out their website: https://phes.appstate.edu/laboratories/injury-laboratory . There are incentives offered for being part of these studies, so you don't want to miss out on this opportunity. Listen as Alan describes the research he is doing, plus what led to his specific interest in studying those that trail run. I was fascinated by his discoveries so far that have been published, and I am definitely going to stay tuned to the results of this research. Enjoy!
