They can help you see whether your child is saying, “I won’t” or “I can’t.” What happened right before my child’s behavior? Behavior doesn’t happen in isolation. Before assuming defiance, look for the trigger that happened immediately before the behavior. Was your child tired, hungry, overstimulated, coming home from school, asked to stop a preferred activity, or told to get off a device? These moments can reveal whether your child’s nervous system is overloaded. Look for triggers and patterns. Notice whether your child is under- or overstimulated. Ask, “What happened right before this?” Parent example: Your child refuses to do homework every day after school. Instead of immediately calling it defiance, you notice they’re exhausted and irritable after holding it together all day. Does my child behave this way everywhere or only under certain conditions? Patterns matter. If the behavior happens mostly after school, during transitions, at bedtime, or when your child feels overwhelmed, that tells you something important.
