On April 17, 1897, a cigar-shaped airship allegedly crashed into a windmill in the tiny town of Aurora, Texas, killing its pilot, who locals claimed was not of this world. The creature was buried with Christian rites in the Aurora Cemetery, and the wreckage was dumped into a nearby well. The story, written by local cotton buyer S. E. Haydon and published in the Dallas Morning News, appeared during the Great Airship Wave of 1896-97, when thousands of Americans reported seeing mysterious flying craft in the skies across the country. Aurora itself was a town on the brink of extinction, devastated by disease, crop failure, and a railroad that never came. Was the crash real, or was it a desperate hoax to save a dying town? We dig into the original newspaper account, the MUFON investigations of the 1970s, the vanishing gravestone, the well water tests, the witnesses who came forward decades later, and every theory in between. This one's lighter than our usual fare, but no less fascinating. Have a forgotten historical mystery, disturbing event, unsolved crime, or hidden conspiracy you think deserves investigation?
