The Catholic Church teaches that in order to understand the Scriptures, we must start with the literal sense - in other words, how the original hearers of the text would have understood it. That is our aim in this podcast - to help understand what the gospel writers (and more importantly, Jesus) were intending to communicate in today's reading, as well as providing links to the Catechism. Each episode is short and designed to be listened to before or after attending daily Mass.","last_synced_at":"2026-06-17T08:17:03.005151+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/daily-gospel-exegesis-774948"},"episode":{"title":"Tuesday of Week 9 in Ordinary Time - Mark 12: 13-17","slug":"tuesday-of-week-9-in-ordinary-time-mark-12-13-17","published_at":"2026-06-01T18:00:00+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/daily-gospel-exegesis-774948/tuesday-of-week-9-in-ordinary-time-mark-12-13-17","show_page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/daily-gospel-exegesis-774948","url":"https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daily-gospel-exegesis/episodes/Tuesday-of-Week-9-in-Ordinary-Time---Mark-12-13-17-eem65m","audio_url":"https://anchor.fm/s/1025ef1c/podcast/play/14407286/https%3A%2F%2Fd3ctxlq1ktw2nl.cloudfront.net%2Fstaging%2F2026-5-15%2F905dc8bb-0002-e5c1-ab9c-cc948e2c758d.mp3","summary":"To support the ministry and access exclusive content, go to: http://patreon.com/logicalbiblestudy For complete verse-by-verse audio commentaries from Logical Bible Study, go to: https://mysoundwise.com/publishers/1677296682850p Mark 12: 13-17 - 'Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.' Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 450 (in 'Lord') - From the beginning of Christian history, the assertion of Christ's lordship over the world and over history has implicitly recognized that man should not submit his personal freedom in an absolute manner to any earthly power, but only to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Caesar is not "the Lord". "The Church. . . believes that the key, the centre and the purpose of the whole of man's history is to be found in its Lord and Master." - "The principle Jesus enunciates here forms part of the basis of Catholic teaching on the relationship of Church and state. Other New Testament writings elaborate on Jesus’ principle, affirming both our duty to respect civil authority (Rom 13:1–7; 1 Tim 2:1–6; Titus 3:1–2; 1 Pet 2:13–17) and our overriding allegiance to God wherever civil authority oversteps its bounds or imposes laws contrary to the moral law (Acts 5:29; Rev 13:1–18).
