Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. Luke 7:36–38 Why did Simon the Pharisee invite Jesus to dine at his house? Though the Gospel does not tell us explicitly, the context suggests that Simon was not yet a believer or disciple. Perhaps he was merely curious about Jesus or, more cynically, sought to test or expose Him. Nevertheless, Jesus, knowing the thoughts and intentions of every heart, accepted the invitation—likely because He perceived in Simon the potential for conversion and salvation. Traditionally, many have associated this unnamed sinful woman with Mary Magdalene, but the Scriptures do not support this identification. Others have confused her with Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who anointed Jesus shortly before His Passion. Yet this event in Luke’s Gospel is clearly distinct, taking place much earlier in Jesus’ public ministry and under different circumstances. Though this woman is undoubtedly a real historical person, the fact that she remains unnamed invites a deeper spiritual reflection: She represents each of us. Her anonymity makes it easier for us to see ourselves in her story. We are all sinners in need of grace. Like her, we are called to approach the Lord with humility, sorrow, and deep love.
