Local officials should carefully evaluate the long-term costs, require data center operators to address their impact on infrastructure and natural resources, and ensure that existing residents are not forced to carry the financial or environmental burden. Data centers may be necessary to support our increasingly digital world, but local governments have a responsibility to negotiate agreements that genuinely benefit the entire community—not just developers, investors, and short-term tax projections.
