This chronological story starts with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and leads you through the most iconic events, influential figures, and cultural milestones that have shaped Italy into what we see today. It’s all serious stuff, but we do take time to stop and laugh at battles over a bucket, rude names, naughty priests and popes, rabbits winning sieges, doves winning battles, bits of dead bodies as tokens of love, and whole series of real historical silly situations that no comedian could think of. Come along every other week for a compelling and insightful glimpse into A History of Italy.","last_synced_at":"2026-08-01T00:18:47.287322+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/a-history-of-italy-1607818"},"episode":{"title":"A History of archeology","slug":"a-history-of-archeology","published_at":"2026-07-31T13:00:00+00:00","page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/a-history-of-italy-1607818/a-history-of-archeology","show_page_url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/a-history-of-italy-1607818","url":"https://www.sentiremedia.com/show/ahistoryofitalypodcast/","audio_url":"https://mgln.ai/e/p28996/episodes.captivate.fm/episode/815ffbf5-93a8-41d0-8031-f17d1be81cb4.mp3","summary":"Episode Summary Forget the whip and the fedora — the real story of archaeology is a 500-year glow-up from rich-guy hobbyism to laser-equipped aircraft revealing lost cities. In this episode, we trace how archaeology (from the Greek for \"study of the past\") evolved from Renaissance collectors chasing ancient coins for prestige, into a rigorous science built on stratigraphy , typology , and hard chemistry. We start with 14th-century Italy, where Petrarch and Boccaccio kick off the antiquarian craze, and traveling collector Ciriaco de' Pizzicolli sketches the Acropolis like a Renaissance travel blogger. Popes get in on it too — Sixtus IV and Julius II found some of the first antiquities museums, scoring a win with the discovery of the Laocoön . Then method starts to show up: John Aubrey gives us the chrono-typological method (dating objects by their style), and Olof Rudbeck gives us the stratigraphic method — the single most important idea in the field, based on reading the layers ( strata ) of the earth like a timeline. The excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum turn archaeology into a public obsession, leading to the founding of the British Museum and the Louvre , and the first university chairs in the discipline (Leiden, 1818; Berlin, 1823). The 1800s deliver the big wins: Champollion cracks Egyptian hieroglyphics via the Rosetta Stone, Christian Jürgensen Thomsen formalizes the Three-Age System (Stone, Bronze, Iron), Heinrich Schliemann excavates Troy and Mycenae , and Giuseppe Fiorelli invents the haunting plaster-cast technique at Pompeii. Finally, we jump into the modern era of archaeometry — where archaeology merges with hard science. We cover radiocarbon dating , potassium-argon dating , thermoluminescence , and dendrochronology , then go full sci-fi with LiDAR ,…","meta_description":"Episode Summary Forget the whip and the fedora — the real story of archaeology is a 500-year glow-up from rich-guy hobbyism to laser-equipped aircraft rev…","key_points":[],"chapters":[],"topics":[],"duration_seconds":1405,"processing_state":"not_requested","actions":[{"name":"request_transcript","method":"POST","url":"https://stenobird.com/v1/public/podcasts/a-history-of-italy-1607818/episodes/a-history-of-archeology/transcription-requests","description":"Idempotently request low-priority transcript generation for this episode."},{"name":"read_markdown","method":"GET","url":"https://stenobird.com/podcast/a-history-of-italy-1607818/a-history-of-archeology.md","description":"Read the agent-friendly Markdown representation of this episode resource."}]}}
