Sightings were reported, and coastal batteries were placed on alert. A Japanese sub actually strafed a fuel depot at Elwood on the California coast, and the next evening something reported to be either a fleet of planes or balloons was spotted, and antiaircraft guns all up and down the coast of California started firing.
