West Memphis, Arkansas was, in a lot of ways, the kind of American small town that people often romanticize. And like all romanticized places, it had its dark spots - such as poverty, underfunded social services, domestic troubles, and a police department under investigation by the Arkansas State Police for suspected mishandling of drug task force money. It was not a perfect place. But for the children who lived there, it was the only place. In the spring of 1993, three eight-year-old boys lived in that world.
