Spaceballs. In 1987, legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks wanted to create a Star Wars- like spoof film. He got permission from Star Wars creator George Lucas to create such a film. Spaceballs was a modest box office hit, but in the nearly four decades since its release, the film has become an instant cult classic. The cult classic status of the original film has led to a sequel, Spaceballs: The New One , coming out April 23, 2027, on the 40th anniversary year of the original. In this episode of Twin Cities Trekkies, which is the second part of six of the podcast's Second Star Trek Film Extravaganza, Wes sits down with Justin, a Star Trek fan, to talk about the film. Yes, we are aware this is not a Star Trek movie, but the film does have Star Trek elements such as a matter-energy transporter beam, the Vulcan Nerve Pinch, and the cameo of future Voyager star Tim Russ.
