Though not one of the Twelve Apostles, he is honored as an Apostle because of his crucial role in spreading the Gospel and building up the first Christian communities. His name was originally Joseph, a Levite from the island of Cyprus. The Apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement” or “son of consolation,” a title that perfectly reflects the character revealed in Sacred Scripture.
