He was born in 1521 in Nijmegen, in what is now the Netherlands, and came of age during the upheaval of the Protestant Reformation. Gifted in intellect and deeply devoted to God, he entered the Society of Jesus, becoming one of the first Jesuits formed under the influence of Ignatius of Loyola. From the beginning, Peter recognized that the crisis in the Church required not only strong leadership, but clear teaching. He devoted himself to preaching, writing, and especially to education. Traveling across Germany, Austria, and surrounding regions, he worked tirelessly to strengthen Catholic life where it had weakened. His approach was firm but charitable.
