Ann Widdecombe has been murdered. A suspect has been arrested, and the police are investigating. They have urged everyone not to speculate about the motive—and neither will I. But another question must be asked. Why, within hours of Ann's death, were some on the Left unable to show even the most basic human decency? Peter Tatchell described Ann Widdecombe as a "bigot" before later deleting his post and apologising. Adam Boulton also apologised after describing the murdered Ann as "a spinster" and "an old maid". Imagine if those comments had been made about a murdered Labour politician. Would the reaction have been the same? This isn't about claiming those remarks had anything to do with the crime. There is no evidence of that. It is about asking whether our political culture has become so tribal that opponents are no longer treated as fellow human beings. This is also the third serving or former MP to be murdered in roughly the last decade. Jo Cox. Sir David Amess. Now Ann Widdecombe. Nigel Farage has recently warned about the security of politicians and the threats they face. Is Britain becoming a more dangerous place for anyone prepared to stand up in public life? Today I'll examine the facts, challenge the double standards, and ask whether Britain has crossed a dangerous line where political hatred is replacing political debate.
