The earliest known use of wrapping paper dates to ancient China, where paper was invented during the Han Dynasty. By the Song Dynasty, officials were wrapping monetary gifts in special envelopes as tokens of appreciation and respect. In ancient Greece, gifts were wrapped in olive leaves and laurel branches, symbolizing victory and honor — the wrapping itself carrying meaning before the gift was even revealed. In India, the Potli method wraps gifts in fabric chosen for its symbolic colors and patterns, reflecting the occasion and the bond between giver and recipient. In West Africa, kente cloth — vibrant, handwoven, deeply symbolic — has long been used not only as clothing but as a way to present and carry gifts, each pattern encoding identity and cultural heritage. In the Western world, modern decorative wrapping paper was essentially invented by accident in 1917, when the Hall brothers — founders of Hallmark — ran out of tissue paper during the holiday season and began selling colorful French envelope linings as a substitute.
