Composed on seven clay tablets, the text describes the emergence of the cosmos through divine conflict, the rise of the god Marduk, and the establishment of cosmic order through the defeat of the primordial chaos figure, Tiamat. From the division of Tiamat’s body, the ordered universe is formed. The stations of the gods are fixed, divine authority is centralized, and humanity is created from the blood of a rebel deity to serve the gods. The epic offers insight into how the Babylonians understood creation, power, kingship, and the structure of the cosmos. Due to the age and condition of the original tablets, portions of the text are damaged or missing. In some places the narration reflects fragmented lines or incomplete passages. These breaks are preserved intentionally, as they are part of the historical reality of the source material. The narration has been delivered to maintain a natural dramatic flow while signaling disruptions in the text where they occur. To gain a deeper understanding of the structure and variations of the epic, it is highly recommended to read King’s full translation directly.
