You are in a dimly lit laboratory in Minnesota. It’s a quiet night. Incubators hum like sleeping beasts. The air carries the faint metallic tang of chemicals. On a bench sits an ordinary glass flask filled with a murky, swirling soup. Inside that soup, something impossible is happening. Scientists have built a cell from scratch. This little chemical blob is the closest humanity has ever come to creating life-like behavior from pure non-life in a lab.
