From his student days onwards, Ayatollah Khamenei’s life story was interwoven with the history of modern Iran. In the 1960s and 70s, Ali Khamenei was arrested six times by the shah’s secret police, Savak, enduring torture and internal exile. These years of underground resistance solidified his revolutionary credentials.
