From local customs and community events to some of the recent changes around the NFL, we discuss how things evolve over time and whether some of the experiences we grew up with are slowly fading away. Is change inevitable, or are we losing something along the way?Once we get to the heart of the episode, it's time to lay the groundwork for future Pop Culture Roulette debates. We set out to establish a baseline for what makes an entertainment property a true franchise. Is it simply having multiple entries? Do spin-offs count? What role do merchandise, expanded universes, reboots, and cultural impact play? Can a property become a franchise without ever reaching mainstream popularity? The questions are easy—the answers, not so much.As the discussion unfolds, we quickly discover that drawing lines in pop culture is harder than it sounds. Definitions get challenged, exceptions emerge, and gray areas become the norm. Which means we're probably setting ourselves up for plenty of future arguments, but that's a problem for another episode.And because we apparently weren't making things complicated enough, we also take a swing at defining the differences between sci-fi, sci-fantasy, and sci-horror.
