## Resource

NHL’s 2026-27 season kicks off with major rule changes: contracts now max out at seven years for re-signings and six for new deals, pushing players toward more frequent negotiations and potentially higher pay. The regular season grows to 84 games to boost divisional rivalries, while preseason shrinks to just four games. Newcomers must wear cut-resistant neck protection, and emergency backup goalies are now required to be on staff and travel with the team. Minimum salaries rise from $850K to $1M by 2029, reflecting league growth. Plus, a loophole allowing instant recall from the AHL without playing a game is closed—players must now log at least one minor-league game before returning to the NHL.
