## Resource

Two Newark residents just got massive prison sentences for a brutal double homicide from May 2022 — Tashauna Hairston, 70 years; Matthew Colon, 90 years. They were convicted for orchestrating the fatal shooting of 18-year-olds Angel Vargas and Saeed Jan, with Hairston driving Colon to the scene where he and two others opened fire. Colon fled to Florida but was eventually apprehended. The victims’ families, still reeling four years later, spoke of irreplaceable loss — one mother called her son “more than a case number.” Prosecutors emphasized that accountability extends beyond the trigger pull, sending a chilling message: all participants in murder face severe consequences. This verdict is a testament to the relentless work of Essex County prosecutors, the Homicide Task Force, and Newark police — a sobering reminder of how deeply these crimes scar communities.
