## Resource

The Rangers’ top-five pick Alberts Smits is a gifted, big-bodied defenseman with Olympic experience—but history warns against rushing young defensemen. Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere struggled early, while Filip Chytil needed AHL seasoning before thriving. With a deeper blue line this year, GMs are prioritizing Smits’ long-term growth over immediate NHL pressure—sending him to Hartford makes sense to let him mature without the spotlight.
